Like the Bacchic brew coursing through your veins
The feelings you had with the new day end,
I lie on the bed, little more than a toy,
And wait on you to learn what happens next,
To hear the tired hymnal to respect
The circumstance of naked limbs demands,
I so hoped it would be different this time
But the twin luxuries of friendship and flesh,
Were there by my side for just long enough
To torture and tantalise me still more.

False dawn, cruel Aurora,
You lied to me in my misery,
You filled my heart with fleeting joy,
Only to mock me in my darkest hour,
You gave me brief glimpse of the light
That almost led the way,
That almost gave me hope,
Before the Fates stole it away.

I’ve so much to give, and so much to show,
But you are not my salvation, no!

And perhaps the trust I placed in you
Was ahead of itself in intensity,
The need for companionship outstripped caution,
Wanting the sanctity of mutual faith,
My gaze was averted in worship
When I should have sought the truth in your eyes,
I placed you on a pedestal up on high
From where you could only look down on me
And from there you dealt our love a deathblow
Hurting a rapt, unsuspecting foe.

False dawn, cruel Aurora,
You lied to me in my misery,
You filled my heart with fleeting joy,
Only to mock me in my darkest hour,
You gave me brief glimpse of the light
That almost led the way,
That almost gave me hope,
Before the Fates stole it away.

I’ve so much to give, and so much to show,
But you are not my salvation, no!

But regret is useless, I would do it again,
Just to finish the day in a lover’s arms,
To feel your warm breath against my bare skin,
To close a night feeling human once more,
Rather than a shell of confusion and tears
Trudging home, lonely, through the dark,
But thought of an upturn in my fortunes
Is lost in the daybreak untangling of bodies,
When the calling of my prayers goes unheard
And my dreams surrender to death at first light.

False dawn, cruel Aurora,
You lied to me in my misery,
You filled my heart with fleeting joy,
Only to mock me in my darkest hour,
You gave me brief glimpse of the light
That almost led the way,
That almost gave me hope,
Before the Fates stole it away.

I’ve so much to give, and so much to show,
But you are not my salvation, no!
