Married to sorrow, I wore a veil of despair,
Divorced from joy- alimony I could not bear-
Luckily our futures weren’t too strongly wed
And our lives in different directions led,
The downfall of what I was will be in time
But the rocky scree of a heavenly climb,
What pains me most is it lasted so long,
Interest and respect were so long gone,
That all that remained was force of habit,
Fear of the unknown made even more tragic
By the isolation caused in running me down-
So weakened I thought in letting go I’d drown.
The life I had built
You tried to crush,
Faith turned to guilt,
Purer souls you hushed… but
My heart’s kingdom is not yours to destroy,
From my hope’s ruin a pyrrhic victory,
For I am Love’s so blind fool no more,
Nor a man made entirely of straw,
I will die a martyr to my own cause,
And rule my life with my own laws,
The pleasure of this sacrifice will never cloy,
There lies my triumph, there lies my joy.
Behind your ecstasy, those unconvincing smiles,
Is written the story of your world’s demise,
You’ll never restore what you have destroyed,
Nor reclaim the heart with which you have toyed,
From the bloody misery of murdered hopes,
I have found without you I can cope,
Those without sin may cast the first stone,
For my faults no longer need I atone,
Life is so much brighter without you near-
In being myself there’s really nothing to fear,
This newly found clarity will see me through-
I’ll embrace a life now renewed.
The life I had built
You tried to crush,
Faith turned to guilt,
Purer souls you hushed… but
My heart’s kingdom is not yours to destroy,
From my hope’s ruin a pyrrhic victory,
For I am Love’s so blind fool no more,
Nor a man made entirely of straw,
I will die a martyr to my own cause,
And rule my life with my own laws,
The pleasure of this sacrifice will never cloy,
There lies my triumph, there lies my joy.
