'The Shadowline' is the first album to feature Phill as main vocalist (Peter, the previous frontman, retired from the fray in late 2002, due to family commitments). It was engineered and co-produced by Reza Udhin of UK electro band Inertia at Cryonica Studios, London. The album was mastered by John Sellekaers at Metarc in Brussels, Belgium, in July 2003. 'The Shadowline' was released in September 2003.
The twelve tracks that comprise 'The Shadowline' are as follows:
Matins, Dirt I Cannot Wash, Mea Culpa, Shibboleth, Colours Revealed, All That I Have Ever Lost, Mutual Faith, A Higher Unity, Diomedean Exchange, Lux Fiat, Valediction, Vespers.
The theme of the album is transitions- life changes, darkness and light, pain and joy. It is about the crossing point in one's life- the point at which one can look both forwards and backwards with equal perspicacity.
'The Shadowline' marks a significant development of the band's emotionally intense sound, with anthemic songs, intelligent lyrics, and drums aimed squarely at the dancefloor.
Lead vocals on the album are by Phill, with the exception of 'Colours Revealed', 'Mutual Faith', and 'Lux Fiat' which are sung by Jamie.
The guest backing vocals on 'Shibboleth' and 'A Higher Unity' are by Alexys B (of Inertia), courtesy of Cryonica Music.
A previous version of 'All That I Have Ever Lost' appeared on Libitina's first demo tape, 'Goddess Of The Shades', in 1995.
